Green Entrepreneurship

Between 2014 and 2023 the Romanian Environmental Partnership Foundation (REPF) and the Romanian American Foundation (RAF) have implemented the first two phases of the Green Entrepreneurship - Sustainable Economic Local Development through Ecotourism Program, with the objective of expanding and supporting the creation of a country-wide ecotourism network. The program was implemented in seven ecotourism destinations in Romania, which were initiated during the first phase of the program.

The strategic partner of the program from its inception is the Association of Ecotourism in Romania.

In total, over the past 9 years (2 program phases), REPF allocated for the development of the 7 Eco-Destinations network more than $2.72 million matching the $3.26 million granted by RAF. 

Starting with 1st of August  2023 phase 3 of the program was started. The new phase is envisioned as a period of significant consolidation.

Specifically, it is foreseen that the ecotourism network will establish an indisputable reputation on the national tourism market and become an irreplaceable pillar of Romania's international brand. 

This will attract a constant flow of Romanian and foreign tourists who enjoy active holidays and nature, generating substantial income for local services and products as part of a sustainable local economy. 

The destinations will be recognized as successful models of local economic and social development in rural areas, based on functional local partnerships at the level of each destination, which will act as generators of innovation and energy in local communities.

It is expected that at the end of the 4 years, the program will produce the following results:
- at least 171 ecotourism related businesses enrolled during the program implementation period
- at least 189 new jobs created thanks to the ecotourism destination development
- a 38% occupancy rate reached at the level of each destination
- over 900.000 tourists hosted by the pensions of the destinations over the upcoming 4 years
- over 2.600.000  nights/ spent by tourists in the 7 destinations in the upcoming 4 years
- the ecotourism brand of each destination fully recognized and promoted by partners in the destination, and all destinations as ecotourism brands with an increased level of recognition locally and nationally, and also with increased international visibility.
